OUR PARTICIPATION AT THE WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DAY 25-26 SEPTEMBER 2019, KUCHING, SARAWAK

President and 4 Members attended the World Environmental Health Day from 25th-26th September 2019, at Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Datu Dr. Penguang Manggil, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing launched the national level World Environmental Health Day 2019 themed Climate Change Challenges – Time for Global Environmental Health to Act in Unison. He was representing Minister, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, at the launch. He added that since the WEHD was first celebrated in Bali, Indonesia on 26th September 2011, it had become an annual event celebrated worldwide.

The event was attended by more than 400 Environmental Health Officers and representatives from all the States of Malaysia. Our Society of Environmental Health, Singapore was indeed delighted to be represented at the WEHD 2019 from 25th -26th September in Kuching Sarawak. Mr Juki anak Endok, President, Health Inspectors Union and as Chairman of the Organising Committee together with Mr Billy Sujang, State Chief Environmental Health Officer,  Sarawak Health Department and Senior Principal Assistant Director, (Environmental Health), Ministry of Health, Sarawak, hosted and welcomed all the delegates amidst their busy schedule.

Our Member, Mr David Tan Heng Piu presented a paper on “Vector Control in High-rise Buildings – Singapore Experience” and shared our challenges in managing vectors in a built-up environment.

 

It was a 2-day learning experience for the attendees as the topics presented discussed and showed why and how Climate Change was an important issue globally and its link with our everyday lives.

The next WEHD will be held in Kota Kinabalu on 26 September 2020. The President of the Environmental Health Officers Union of Sabah, Mr Ibrahim Madrin, had extended an invitation to our Society for a duly Goodwill Visit and to attend the WEHD.  The Society will positively accept the invitation and strongly consider attending the WEHD in 2020.
